Q: Can you think of a more appropriate way to bring up the milestone than your signature delivery? A: It was nice. It felt like I could get him (van der Dussen) that way and pulled it off, I guess. Definitely take it and enjoy it, one to reflect on when it is done and dusted. Q: Is it where prioritising Test cricket for Australia and the sacrifices pays off? A: I guess so. I know I prioritised it. I don’t look at it as a sacrifice or anything like that. I have thoroughly enjoyed my April and May spending time with (wife) Alyssa at home and away from cricket. The last 18 months, two years has been a lot more consistent and probably some of the best Test cricket I’ve played. Hopefully that can continue.
I won’t tell you what he told me when we walked out after lunch but special to see him achieve what he has done in cricket in all three formats. Q: Two-day Test. Can you believe what’s happened over the past 48 hours? A: Yeah, I can. Only reason I can because you’ve got the two best bowling attacks going at each other. There is going to be wickets falling and a great contest. The wickets was too much but it shows the quality of bowlers that’s running around out here.
For just the second time in history, a Test match has been completed inside two days in Australia. In all, a staggering 36 wickets fell for just 504 runs at an average of only 14. 00. But, to the winners go the spoils, and Australia will be more than happy to emerge from ‘the green monster’ in Brisbane with a six-wicket win and a 1-0 lead in the series. Head was the man of the match thanks to his first-innings 92, but Cummins wasn’t too far behind after taking 5-42 in the second innings, and finishing with match figures of 7-77.

A: Two very good attacks. Not much fun for us batters on that kind of wicket. Fingers crossed the wicket’s a little bit better in Melbourne but we will wait and see. It is a big break now. Q: Unexpectedly. Sure is. What about the South African pace attack? What impressed you? A: They’re all quality bowlers. I haven’t seen much of (Marco) Jansen, I faced him in the first innings, he was a good bowler. (Kagiso) Rabada has done it for years and (Anrich) Nortje has got really good pace and bowled well. Good attack. Hopefully another good Test match in Melbourne. Q: What a great position for the Aussies to be in because you have so much depth with the bowlers.
None of us can recall a two-day Test. Very interesting, let’s leave it at that. Q: 300th test wicket. How special was that moment earlier today? Your teammates got right around you. A: Pretty cool. ‘Heady’ (Travis Head) was the first one to say, “That was a better result at 300 than the one he dropped. ” Very cool. Very privileged. I’m sure I will reflect on it later but it’s nice.

I’m not sure how many times you finished a Test with a win in under two days? A: It wasn’t much fun for us batters to be honest. It was a very challenging wicket. Lots of seam movement, divets in the wicket. It wasn’t much fun but fortunately we were on the right end of it. Q: Was that the toughest pitch you’ve battled on so far? A: In Australia anyway. In terms of pace and bounce and seam and all that kind of stuff. Yeah, not too often you see a game over in two days, a Test match. Nice to be on the right end. Q: Yourself, you managed some runs, not many people did but Travis Head, he seemed to make things look different to everyone else.

But gee wiz, the first Test at the Gabba gave that expression a whole new meaning.
A: He played beautifully last night. It was a nice partnership we were able to form there. Took the game on. It was the kind of wicket if you sat there and tried to defend, you won’t last long. Anything in his areas, he went after. I was trying to do the same thing. Fortunately we were able to get a few away. Heady played beautifully again. Q: So much talk about the two bowling attacks being the best in the world going at it.

Just enjoying it. It is a great group to be part of. Maybe not always in two days but when you win Test matches, it is great to enjoy successes. Q: This bowling unit is functioning so well at the moment, why do you think that is? You are all contributing such great depth. A: Bowling captain! I can’t say it, can I? Q: You just did. A: I did anyway. ‘Bolo’ (Scott Boland) has been unbelievable but the other four of us, Josh (Hazlewood) is unfortunately coming back from injury, but we’ve all grown up together.
Do you think his first-innings knock was the difference in this match? A: Definitely. He is man of the match for me. You look at the scorecard, that sums it up. 5. 59pm on Dec 18, 2022‘Pretty cool’: Starc reflects on big milestoneMitchell Starc spoke to Channel Seven after the game... Q: Mitch, two-day test. Felt like a whirlwind as a viewer, how about as a player? A: Not sure we’ve had a two-day Test before.
